Empower

GENY’s leadership believes that, as a community, we can no longer wait for cisgender allies to lead and determine the work needed for equality and justice. We can no longer be seen as passive, helpless ‘victims’ that need to be rescued but instead must act as a self-empowered people fighting abuse and oppression. In order for us to gain the necessary policies, laws, resources, and financial assets, we must all stand tall, speak out, and demand accountability from those who hold power.

What is GENY doing?

The first step in empowerment is getting individuals to understand that their lived experiences and stories are important to the process of winning justice and equality. Our Town Hall events not only get people up and talking, but they are a wonderful opportunity to inform community members and allies of current issues, needed legislation and how they can join to strengthen our numbers.

Most of our Forum panelists find that their participation in the event motivates them to increase their advocacy efforts and become a stronger voice for their community.

GENY continues to support and work in coalition with other transgender and LGBT organizations by holding Advocacy Day events in Albany and around the state. These advocacy events are centered around training participants on how to meet with elected officials, current legislation needed to protect our community, and how to tell their personal story.

Our mailings and social media postings continue to educate members on issues and legislation, ask for participation in our organized grassroot actions, and offer opportunities to become more involved in the work to influence the policy-making process and participate in decision-making.

GENY believes that grassroot development and training enables community members to take control of their circumstances, become stronger and more confident, exercise power, achieve their own goals, and help themselves and others to maximize the quality of their lives. As the number of community advocates grow, it will allow us to build accountable and responsive government institutions that can meet the needs of transgender, non-binary, and intersex New Yorkers.
